Based on area of coverage, networks are three types.

  1. LAN - Local Area Network
  2. MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
  3. WAN - Wide Area Network

1. LAN - Local Area Network

  • It is a network of several computers in same building.
  • Can be in the range up to 1km radius (small geographical area).
  • Connected through cables.
  • It is simple and cheap network.

2. MAN - Metropolitan Area Network

  • It is an interconnection of LAN, acts as connection among multiple buildings.
  • Can be in the range within a city.
  • Connected through cables.
  • It is optimised for longer distances.
  • Higher transmission speed than LAN.

3. WAN - Wide Area Network

  • It is a network of large scale geographical area.
  • It also connects different smaller networks like LAN and MAN.
  • It is mainly over telecommunication lines.
  • Banks and big organisations use WAN in order to communicate with their branches from other cities/states/countries.
