A network is a setup of two or more computers to communicate with each other and share resources like data/software/hardware.
Based on area of coverage, networks are three types.
- LAN - Local Area Network
- MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
- WAN - Wide Area Network
1. LAN - Local Area Network
- It is a network of several computers in same building.
- Can be in the range up to 1km radius (small geographical area).
- Connected through cables.
- It is simple and cheap network.
2. MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
- It is an interconnection of LAN, acts as connection among multiple buildings.
- Can be in the range within a city.
- Connected through cables.
- It is optimised for longer distances.
- Higher transmission speed than LAN.
3. WAN - Wide Area Network
- It is a network of large scale geographical area.
- It also connects different smaller networks like LAN and MAN.
- It is mainly over telecommunication lines.
- Banks and big organisations use WAN in order to communicate with their branches from other cities/states/countries.
